If they're really persistent the fabric may wear out faster, but there's no risk to their health.
Dogs already seek out cool surfaces in summer on instinct - the kitchen tiles, the bathroom floor, the edge of the bath. The mat simply extends that natural reflex. To help them take to it in the first few days, place it where your dog already likes to rest, and pop their favourite toy or blanket on top.
